How Bhansa Calculates Nutrition

Start with where the number came from

A calorie count is only as good as its source. Bhansa labels every value with one of six badges: USDA verified, USDA (partial), Estimated (AI), Barcode, From label, or Manual entry. A glance at the badge tells you how much to trust the number.

Recipes: ingredients and portions

Where we can, we match each recipe ingredient to USDA FoodData Central, then scale the values to the amounts in the recipe and the size of your portion. If some ingredients don’t have data, the recipe shows as partial or estimated instead. A USDA match on most ingredients doesn’t make the whole recipe verified.

Photos and descriptions are estimates

No photo can show exactly how much oil went in the pan or what’s hiding under the sauce. When you log a meal from a photo or a description, you get an AI estimate that you can check and edit before saving. Fix the foods and amounts so they match what you really ate.

Barcodes, labels and manual entries

Barcode and label scans use the nutrition info on the product. Just check the serving size against how much you actually had. Manual entries use whatever numbers you type in, and they’re badged as manual so they never get mixed up with database values.

Targets and tracking

Food logging is free. On Premium, Bhansa checks the plans it makes against your calorie and macro targets, and tells you whether a day is on target or the closest it could get. Planning toward a target and logging what you actually ate are still two separate things.
